Opening with the chants of what can only be described as a gospel choir this song which builds to the tempo of hands clapping in unison is like a religious awakening for the ears. If you are an Ellie Goulding fan perhaps you are missing those wispy vocals, never fear because in Holding On For Life (which is perhaps my second best track on this immaculate album) the wispy wonderment is back. On My Mind is sublime, with lyrical vengeance and downright catchy rhythm, it cannot be anything but a crowd pleaser. The song ends with Ellie’s infectious laughter, probably in foresight of the haters.
Whilst many are labeling the whistle in Keep on Dancing overkill I find it quite catchy and is a song I can easily envisage being danced along to by some domestic goddess ridding their wardrobe of any traces of the ex or last years’ trends. You are left feeling cleansed and as if you have just turned on the shower after a long hot summer day, it is pure unadulterated pleasure.

The intro is one best played at full blast in the darkness of your room, it is spiritual and the hypnotic sound courses through your veins like an electric spark. This is art after all, a smorgasbord of delightful treats, samples of emotions and memories in lyrical form. Let me be clear – I am not crazy about every single track BUT I don’t think anyone is ever going to love every single track on an album barring the artist naturally. The greatest minds the world has known didn’t do exactly what the critics wanted actually that’s how critics were born – a full time career made from commentary on genius, wishing to come close to their stardom.īut alas yes I too am a critic I guess, perhaps not as critical as you would like but nonetheless here I am offering my five-cents worth on Ellie Goulding’s latest offering which frankly I cannot find fault with. Secondly the title should offer at least a glimpse as to what is going on? This is an album of experimentation, just because Ellie’s experiments are all quite capable of making the charts doesn’t make them any less an experiment than you would like. It is like complaining that a person who has shown an aptitude for science has outgrown their teenage-year chemistry set and has now “lost themselves” because they are no longer experimenting in mom’s kitchen but at CERN. Yes she is now working with new producers, perhaps best known for their chart successes, but surely this is to be expected? When you reach this level of international recognition these are the people who will want to work with you. Whilst most reviews I’ve read have slated Ellie Goulding for “losing” herself in pursuit of chart topping stardom, I disagree. This quirky album has blown my expectations and even has a hint of Bollywood flavor so it definitely delivered.
